What are heating elements?
Heating elements are equipment that convert electrical energy into heat energy and are utilised to heat substances.
These elements work on the principle of Joule heating. This means "When the electricity flows through a conductor, the atoms get heated up and start vibrating. This builds up heat energy, which flows through surface of the conductor and helps to radiate it"
Types of Heating Elements
Depending on the components of electrical heating element, it can be broadly classified into three types :
- Metallic Heating Elements
Metallic heating elements belong to a class of equipment that uses an alloy of Nickel and chromium, commonly known as Nichrome, consisting of 80 percent Nickel and 20 percent Chromium. Nichrome is known for its high resistance which is beneficial in heating elements for temperatures ranging between 50-1500°C
- PTC Heating Element
PTC heating element comprises PTC (silicone) rubber that conducts electricity and has a resistivity that keeps on increasing exponentially with an increase in temperature. Due to this phenomena, the element heats up quickly.
- Composite Heating Element
These types of heating elements are made of a mixture of metallic and ceramic materials. These are found in several appliances like electric stoves, ovens, toasters etc.
Applications of Heating Elements
→ Heating elements are used in the biomedical industry, in order to manufacture incubators, blood analyzers, fluid warming equipment and various other diagnostic equipment.
→ Heating elements are also used in the food service industry, in various appliances like warmers, microwaves, storage machines etc.
→ Applications also extend to the electronic industry such as 3d printers, Xerox machines etc.
→ Flexible heaters are used in consumer goods like heated seating, irons, water heaters, a few pet products etc.
